Also known as Monkey Island, Pellew Island is one of Jamaica’s small, near-shore islands. Located just off the San San coast near Port Antonio, Pellew Island is an important part of Jamaica’s natural heritage and an iconic image of our northeastern coast. Originally part of Cold Harbour Estates, it was purchased in 1953 by Baron Heinrich Thyssen as a Valentine’s gift for his fiancée, and has been privately owned ever since. The current owner plans to construct four villas on the island. We had a good turnout at Gah San on Sunday, April 6, 2008, to the extent that parking became a slight problem. It seemed more people than usual participated in the ceremony. In the past, people would go directly to the graves they had come to visit and not bother to come up to the colonnade, where the ceremony is conducted and for information on locating the graves. Formerly the Toronto Hakka Conference in winter 2000 and 2004, Roundhouse Reunion 2008 will be held this month at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, Scarborough. Hakka roundhouses are under consideration to be designated World Heritage Sites by the United Nations. Dating back up to 1,000 years, roundhouses sheltered dozens of multi-generational families in hundreds of rooms. Like a mini-village, the massive earthen dwelling would offer protection, communal space for celebrations, and self-sufficiency in food and water. ...more info
