Hard as it is to believe, it's now been more than half a century since Jamaican airwaves were treated to a new sound, embodied in the phrase "This is Charlie Babcock, the Cool Fool with the Live Jive!" Dr Lawrence Williams, a research scientist at the Scientific Research Council (SRC), has been awarded an international patent on a compound isolated from the Guinea Hen Weed as a protein complex of dibenzyl trisulphide. The Legislative Assembly of Ontario unanimously passed a resolution brought by a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to recognize August 6, each year, as Jamaican Independence Day throughout the Canadian province. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is engaged in what can only be called an avian holocaust through its Bye Bye Blackbird program that has poisoned tens of millions of birds over the last decade. When Fan Shee Hoo came into this world, her country’s leader was a Qing-dynasty emperor and the automobile was freshly patented in America. When she left it, her Prime Minister owned a Twitter account and televisions came in 3D. Hoo passed away in Scarborough last Wednesday at the age of 115.
